Small things

Kim left a most helpful comment a few days ago about knitting flat circles and I just want to make sure all have read it: click here.

Gallery of Misused Quotation Marks

I've wondered several times if there was a pattern for these slippers out there... I had several pairs of these myself when I was little.

Important

I'm a happy, healthy survivor of breast cancer at age 25 thanks to early detection by breast self-exam.

It is my most profound wish that all women, everywhere, do breast self-exams every month.
Here's how.
The most important thing is that you learn to know your own body and what is normal for you so that you can tell when something has changed.

I ought not rant, really... I'm not the type. But we (the husband and I) got to wondering about what exactly was being heard and read by Americans about the situtation. I rang up my mom who told me it's "all that's on" the television there But still ... I wondered about the content and focus of the coverage so I went poking around at the online sources that used to be local to me inside the US and got rather provoked as I do by most mainstream media these days. Who wouldn't be provoked by this sort of headline? (Source : boingboing.)

Regarding the contributions: the comments from last night's post and this post and its comments bring up some good points... plus Mom got a bit irritated with me for not taking into account the amount individuals contribute through their churches.

This post helps to visualize that newest incomprehensible number, 80,000. In Norway alone, 432 people are missing that are known to have been in the area and 21 are confirmed dead. Sweden has 3500 missing and 44 confirmed dead. Speaking of Swedes, I was so relieved to see that Francis left a comment on his blog and am anxiously awaiting a real post on his experiences in Thailand.

and a bit of knitting...

I just spotted a completed Must Have Cardigan over at a brand spankin' new blog.

Congratulations!

Anyone else out there have a completed Must Have on display? I'd love to know about it... and I think my list of people knitting along is rather out of date, so if you're one and you've finished please let me know.

I do know of these:

I'm probably taking a more active interest in the Must Have again since I've started up on finishing mine. I had 3 miscrossed 9-stitch cables 2 crosses down and spent most of night before last repairing them. Instead of ripping the whole bit back so far, I unraveled just those cables and repaired them. I'd love to be able to do a tutorial on how to do that but I'm rather clumsy at it, I'm afraid. Right now I'm trying to ignore how loose the stitches are around those 3 cables, since I am a strong believer in blocking as a cure.

The tone of this article, whether they're right or wrong about declining help, makes my skin crawl. I mean, being appalled that a nation would "dare not except our help?!?" - is that not rather ... well, self-righteous seems a bit mild. And here we have Sweden, a country of 8 million is sending twice as much money as the US... what's the population of the US? 293 million?
I realize that's "so far" but still...

Question from a reader:

Is it possible to knit a flat circle with a set of four needles?

Answer from me:

Yes, it is possible, though I don't know how much detail I can give myself. I do know how to start a flat circle in the center and have a tutorial about it. After starting a circle in the middle you'll have to increase at a certain rate that, unfortunately, I don't have memorized, but I have made a circular shawl in the round using a using a pattern by Elizabeth Zimmerman from Knitter's Almanac. (When in doubt, turn to Mrs. Zimmerman.) Another idea is to take a look at dishcloth patterns, as many are made this way and there are many patterns to be found here.

Just thought there might be someone else out there wondering...

Okay. When you're working until 10:30 pm and have to be back at 7:30 am, you don't want your car to look like this when you're trying to leave.

The results of the earthquake in the Indian Ocean are too horrible to contemplate. Seeing and reading about it in the Norwegian news makes me feel like I can't breathe... especially about children who can't find their parents and people who are seeing their dead relatives on television.

And I realize that CNN has helped a little Swedish boy be identified, but honestly... the fact that CNN International is showing bodies floating in the sea and lining the beaches just seems so ... gratuitous ... and seems to serve no real purpose. It does, however, make me sick to a degree that I feel paralyzed.

Oh, what a horrible day at work. It ought to be illegal to call in sick at Christmas - it's just so suspicious. I'm tempted to take a "mental health day" tomorrow, but promise not to.

Chery asked what I've been knitting and the answer is absolutely nothing. I haven't had/taken the time to really unpack the knitting stuff. But I think just saying that has inspired me to find the Must Have cardigan and work on it tonight as tonight I'm going to do absolutely nothing but sit on my rump in front of the television.

Merry Christmas!

Although I miss my extended family in North Carolina, I have to say that Norway does Christmas very very well... a few things:

Just rather stinks that I have to work tomorrow. The place I was working last year was closed for the whole week. Speaking of work, I'd better go to sleep now.

Though I realize it would be completely confusing to do it otherwise, I just want to inform you guys that the all the non-Scandanavian IKEA sites have products unalfabetically arranged. Å, Ä and Ö come after Z.

Thank you. I just wanted to get that off my chest.

Moved and getting settled. I don't know who had snuck into our house and left all this stuff but it sure made moving this time a whole lot more work than moving last time.

We've (well, mostly I've) been to IKEA a number of times since I last posted, and I just want to share what a pain in the ...tuckus... it is to deal with those crowds. But we didn't have any place for clothes in this house (no closets whatsoever) and it was a necessary evil. People go insane at IKEA before Christmas, I think.

And while I'm sharing I'll just show you guys what we're keeping our clothes in now...

Pretty, eh?

And while I'm at it, I just want to say how cute I think this series is.
