I'm curious to see how many versions of "Are You Sleeping?" we can come up with. In addition to the English :

Are you sleeping, are you sleeping?
Brother John, Brother John?
Morning bells are ringing, morning bells are ringing
Ding Ding Dong, Ding Ding Dong.

I remember the first part of the French:

Frère Jacques, Frère Jacques,
Dormez vous? Dormez vous?

and Amalie taught me Norwegian:

Fader Jakob, Fader Jakob,
Sover du? Sover du?
Hører du ei klokken, hører du ei klokken
Ding dong dong, Ding dong dong

The reason this is on my mind is I have a song in my head that I learned in nursing school to help us remember the symptoms of preeclampsia:

Preeclampsia, high blood pressure,
weight is gained, fingers swell
protein in the urine, in the third trimester
bed rest helps and mag sulfate
C'mon, I'm really curious!

September 11, 2002

Courtesy of Sarah, the rest of the French:

Frere Jacques, Frere Jacques,
Dormez-vous? Dormez-vous?
Sonnez les matines, sonnez les matines
Ding ding dong, ding ding dong.

and some of the Spanish:

...Duermes tu? Duremes tu?
Tocan las campanas, tocan las campanas,
Din din don, din din don.

And Inga (check out those socks!) gives us the German:

Bruder Jakob, Bruder Jakob,
schläfst Du noch, schläfst Du noch?
Hörst Du nicht die Glocken, hörst Du nicht die Glocken?
Ding Ding Dong, Ding Ding Dong.

And long after the fact...

My best friend in high school was named Melissa. We had gone to elementary school together (but weren't close friends) then I moved on to the private high school where I had been a campus kid owing to the fact that my parents worked there. She came later in that fall and I was the one who kind of showed her around. Otherwise, we were close simply because we did everything together. One of the more silly things we did was sitting in the middle of the road outside the boy's dormitory on Halloween one year in protest of my parent's house being toilet papered... we were likely playing cards and nervously waiting for the campus "police" to come get us. I could go on and on about the silliness that was between us, but I won't. We kept in touch throughout 4 years at different colleges, and saw each other last at my 10 year high school reunion, when it was like we'd never been apart. I've been trying to reach her for the past couple of months, but have only succeeded in conversing with her answering machine. But I shall perservere.

  • Movie: The Princess Bride... has everything, romance, adventure, comedy, drama... ;o)
  • Music: Ok. This one is impossible. Sorry.
  • Food: Well, if the essentials are being taken care of, I'll say popcorn. Or maybe Skittles. Can I have both?
  • Knitting book, yarn, needles: Knitting without Tears by Elizabeth Zimmerman. Size 3mm swallow casein double pointed needles, and some good sport weight wool or wool/acrylic mix.

Personal Yarns

Just leave a note in the comments to point the way to your answers!

"School days, school days, good ole..."

1. Where did you attend school as a child? (the first 6 years or so...) What do you remember about the building and the playground?

2. Do you remember your first day? your teacher's name? best friends? your favorite activity?

3. What sort of lunch box did you have? What was usually in it?

4. Describe yourself as an elementary school student.

My answers:

1. Rabun Gap Community School, Rabun Gap, Georgia. It was a big brick building, with the first 3 grades on the bottom floor and the next 3 on the top floor, the library on one end and the cafeteria on the other and an auditorium in the middle. The entrance had steps and columns and as you went in the principal's office (Mr. O.C. Cook) was on the right and his secretary sat in there and dispensed medical knowledge and aspirin and such. The younger kid's playground was in the back of the building and the older's in the front. There was a big tree outside my first grade room with a water fountain that if you stepped REAL hard on the pedal (which was near the base) the water would shoot straight up for several feet. Which some bullies took advantage of, naturally.

2. I don't remember my first day... but there's a picture of me with my slightly bell-bottomed blue jeans and a big white belt, carrying my little cloth purse that had a couple of dolls in it that I think is from my first day. The teacher's name... the name Mrs. Beasley floats through my head for 1st grade, but that's the doll, isn't it? Hmm... I'll check with Mom on this one. Mrs. Godbold was probably 3rd grade, I remember her well because she also taught me piano and lived just up the street, with her 3 sons and a Basset Hound named Rocky. Melanie, of course, was my best friend early on in school. She was a year behind me, but we had been friends from before my first year of school. She moved away when I was 8, but we're still in touch. My best friend during the later years was definitely Myra. She was quiet and shy with long, dark, straight hair and glasses. Just like me. My favorite thing was not the PE type stuff. I usually got hit in the head with the softball or some such thing. Tho playing a baseball type game where you kicked a big red rubber ball rather than trying to hit it with a bat was okay. I think I felt pretty neutral about most of the subjects... didn't really hate or love anything in particular.

3. I had a metal Peanuts lunch box like this one. And then a brown plastic box with a white lid that had my name on it. With peanut butter & jelly or ham and cheese sandwiches, maybe an apple or something. Mom took me suddenly off white bread and onto wheat (a radical idea at the time) and I was jealous of the other kids with their softer bread.

4. Yep: quiet, shy, glasses. I loved to read, and wasn't a terribly social person, except with one or two people. Rarely had anybody over to my house. I did once have several people from my class at my house for a party of some sort and remember feeling quite nervous and uncertain about the whole thing. Apparently I was in trouble a lot in the 1st and 2nd grades for talking when I wasn't supposed to and subsequently shut up almost completely until I was well into high school, where I was a "campus kid" at a private high school and therefore knew everybody. I still feel very uncomfortable talking to people I don't know (except when I have on my nursing persona).

Friday Five

1. What's the last vivid dream that you remember having?
Update: I dreamed last night that I was swimming... and learning how to rescue people from drowning... when I looked down and noticed that the lower half of my right leg was coming apart. It didn't seem to surprise me that my leg was made out of plastic and contained what appeared to be some sort of wiring near the foot, I was just upset that the glue (or whatever had been holding it together) had come apart in the water. I went to get it fixed and wound up having to get checked out throughly which meant they were going to do some invasive tests and I was objecting while a nice middle-aged, plump nurse wrapped the outer casing of my leg with an ACE bandage to hold it together. That's all I remember.

> 2. Do you have any recurring dreams?
I used to dream I was back in high school a lot. Probably will again, now that I gave it a thought! Of course, those are usually pleasant dreams. I liked high school. (Weird, no?)

3. What's the scariest nightmare you've ever had?
I took a anti-inflammatory drug once called indomethacin and had amazingly vivid dreams with lots of explosions and fire and death and destruction. The side effects do say something about "psychic disturbances" but it does seem like a very weird thing. But it did happen after the first (and only) dose and never again. One other time I dreamed I killed someone with a pair of scissors. Yipes.

4. Have you ever written your dreams down or considered it? Why or why not?
Probably. I kept a fairly detailed journal for a couple of years and I likely wrote down some dreams there. Maybe I'll go pull them out and take a peek.

5. Have you ever had a lucid dream? What did you do in it?
(Lucid Dreaming occurs when you are dreaming, and then at some point in the dream, you become aware that you are dreaming.) No, but that's really cool...

Personal Yarns (thanks Melissa for suggesting the title!)

I want to try my hand at question asking... mainly for my knit blog buddies, but hey! everyone is welcome! If you're participating, please leave a comment below. (Just because I'm a curious kind of gal.)

1. Where were you born? What do you know about your own birth? (time, circumstance, etc...)

2. Do you have a baby picture you can put onto your weblog? If not, tell us what you looked like as a baby.

3. What kind of a baby or toddler were you according to the people who were around when you were young?

4. Know any cute baby-related quotes or anecdotes?

My answers:
1. I was born in Sylva, N.C. on Sept. 10 at 11:02 am. All I know is that I was a caesarian birth under general anesthetic and Mom says she was zonked out for quite a long time afterwards. I was one of a set of 3 cousins that were born within one month. Both of them and another born the next spring were (are) boys.

2. Rather cute, I'm of the opinion. Wonder what happened? ;O)

3. Dad says that I was colicky and had to be bounced for the first several months I was alive. Apparently I cried every time I was put down. I walked for the first time the day before my first birthday. And I liked to play the piano.

4. Dad talks about someone... I think it was his mother... saying that she had been premature at birth. Someone asked her : "Well, did you live?" and she said "They say I did, and did well!"
